Focusing on an object

Get into your chosen position. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, hold it for a few moments, then exhale slowly. When you feel sufficiently relaxed, open your eyes and soften your gaze as you focus on the object.

Do not try to memorize its features, but just observe it as if it is a bud that is going to blossom, or a musical box that will play an enchanting melody.

Allow the background to fade into soft focus as you zoom in on the object with the clinical detachment of a camera lens. Become acutely aware of its texture, colour and form. It is important to take your time as you do this. Do not let yourself become impatient to move on to the next part of the exercise. The object is not going anywhere.

Visualize yourself touching it, tasting it and smelling it; again, take your time. This is not a chore that needs to be done, it is the doing that is the whole purpose of the exercise.

This is a good point at which to end the meditation when you are a beginner (go to the countdown at the end), but when you feel ready to go further than this you can add the following stages.

Imagine that you have been shrunk to the size of an ant and can explore the object. Look back from that perspective and see yourself sitting in the chair. If this is difficult at first, persevere, as this ability to develop a sense of detachment and focus your awareness elsewhere is important.

Imagine the processes that were involved in manufacturing or growing this object and then the stages involved in bringing it to you. Visualize its part in the hierarchy of nature, the forces that brought it into being and the purpose of its existence. Even a paperweight or a pebble have a purpose and an indispensable place in existence, for everything in existence is interconnected. As you become aware of this the boundary between the objective and subjective will become blurred and you will become part of what you perceive. As your awareness increases, the object will become suffused with meaning.

Perceiving objects with the eyes of your spiritual side, your 'Higher Self', reveals an infinite chain of events and correspondences and the knowledge that everything is an indispensable particle in the pattern of existence.

When you are ready, return to waking consciousness by counting down from ten to one and stamping your feet to reaffirm your return to the physical world.
